High-Compaction Foundation Sub-Grade

Road Base Calculator

Calculate tons and cubic yards of road base, crusher run, aggregate base course (ABC), and quarry process (QP) for patio sub-grades, driveways, and asphalt paving foundations. Features 15% compaction settlement math.

Engineering Principles of Road Base & Crusher Run

Road base (often marketed locally as Crusher Run, Quarry Process / QP, Item #4, or Aggregate Base Course / ABC) is the most structurally dense aggregate produced by a quarry.

Unlike clean stone (which contains only uniform rocks), road base is graded from 3/4-inch crushed stone down to fine mineral dust. When sprinkled with water and compacted using a heavy vibratory plate compactor or tandem roller, the dust creates a mechanical lock between the larger rocks. In civil engineering tests, properly compacted road base routinely achieves 95% to 98% Standard Proctor Density.

Because road base contains dense fines and compacts tightly, its bulk density is significantly higher than other gravels: 2,970 lbs per cubic yard (~1.49 US short tons/yd³).

Road Base Compaction Formula: 1. Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
2. Depth in Feet = Depth (inches) ÷ 12
3. Base Geometric Volume (cu yd) = [Area × Depth in Feet] ÷ 27
4. Recommended Volume (cu yd) = Base Volume × (1 + Ordering Adjustment % ÷ 100)
5. Total Road Base Tons = Recommended Volume × Bulk Density (tons/yd³)

Worked Example: 20 ft × 16 ft Paver Patio Sub-Base

Project: 20 ft × 16 ft Patio Foundation with 6 Inches Compacted Road Base (15% Ordering Adjustment)
  1. Calculate Area: 20 ft × 16 ft = 320 square feet.
  2. Convert Depth: 6 inches ÷ 12 = 0.50 ft.
  3. Calculate Base Volume: 320 sq ft × 0.50 ft = 160 cubic feet.
  4. Convert to Cubic Yards: 160 cu ft ÷ 27 = 5.93 cubic yards.
  5. Apply 15% Ordering Adjustment: 5.93 yd³ × 1.15 = 6.82 recommended cubic yards (+0.89 yd³ allowance for mechanical compaction and subgrade intrusion).
  6. Calculate Weight (Road Base @ ~1.49 tons/yd³ / 2,970 lb/yd³): 6.82 yd³ × 1.485 tons/yd³ ≈ 10.12 tons (20,240 lbs, or ~10.16 tons at 1.49 tons/yd³).
  7. Installation Note: Install in two separate 3-inch lifts, lightly misting with water before running a plate compactor over each lift.

Installation Best Practices for Road Base

  • Install in 3-Inch Lifts: Do not attempt to compact 6 inches of road base in a single pass. Standard rental plate compactors only have sufficient vibratory force to compact 3 inches of stone at a time. Spreading and compacting two 3-inch layers ensures complete density from bottom to top.
  • Optimum Moisture Content: Road base must be slightly damp to achieve maximum compaction. If the material is bone dry, stone dust will puff into the air and the stones will not interlock. Spray the pile with a garden hose until it holds its shape when squeezed in your fist.

Frequently Asked Questions About Road Base

Road base (also known as Crusher Run, Aggregate Base Course or ABC, 3/4-minus, or Quarry Process) is a manufactured blend of crushed stone ranging from 3/4-inch down to fine rock dust. It is engineered to achieve 95%+ Proctor compaction when moistened and compacted with a vibratory roller, forming a rigid, non-yielding foundation for paving.

An ordering adjustment can help account for material waste, measurement variation, uneven surfaces, and/or expected settlement. Actual requirements vary by material and site conditions. Because loose road base settles and compacts when rolled or tamped, ordering only the geometric quantity can leave a project short because of material waste, uneven surfaces, measurement variation, and settlement.

For pedestrian paver patios and walkways, a minimum compacted road base depth of 4 to 6 inches is required. For paver driveways supporting vehicle traffic, a minimum of 8 to 12 inches of compacted road base installed in 3-inch lifts is required.
