About Our Calculators & Engineering Methodology

This collection of aggregate tools was built to bridge the gap between architectural blueprints, DIY project measurements, and real-world quarry sales yards.

Why Two Calculation Steps Are Necessary

Many consumer calculators make the mistake of assigning a single generic multiplier (such as "1.4 tons per yard") to every stone. In reality, the weight of an aggregate is determined by stone geology (granite, limestone, basalt, quartzite), moisture saturation, particle gradation (angular clean stone vs. dense graded stone with quarry dust), and degree of compaction.

Our calculation engine strictly separates:

  • Geometric Volume: Exact Length × Width × Depth converted into standard cubic feet, cubic yards, and cubic meters.
  • Density-Based Mass: Specific bulk density curves that translate cubic volume into US short tons (2,000 lbs) and kilograms.
  • Compaction & Waste Allowances: Realistic job-site overages (typically 10%–15%) to prevent project shortages.

Default Density Assumptions

Our calculators use standard North American quarry averages for loose-to-moderately-compacted material:

Material Category Lbs / Cu Yd Tons / Cu Yd Primary Characteristics
General Gravel 2,700 1.35 Commercial crushed stone and round gravel blend.
Driveway Stone (Dense Grade) 2,835 1.42 Crushed stone with rock dust fines for interlocking compaction.
Pea Gravel (3/8" Washed) 2,565 1.28 Smooth round stones with higher void ratio than graded mixes.
Crushed Stone (#57 Angular) 2,700 1.35 Clean 3/4" fractured stone with minimal dust; excellent drainage.
Landscape River Rock 2,430 1.22 1"–3" smooth decorative rock; large inter-stone air gaps.
Road Base (Crusher Run / ABC) 2,970 1.49 Engineered for maximum rolling compaction and load bearing.

The Importance of Verifying Supplier Weight Tickets

Because material density varies depending on quarry geology, rock moisture from rain, and processing methods, our calculators clearly identify calculated weights as estimates. When preparing a purchase order for large commercial projects (over 20 tons), always confirm the supplier's certified weight-per-yard specification.
