Quarry Scale Weight Estimator

Gravel Tons Calculator

Convert gravel dimensions or known cubic yards directly into US short tons (2,000 lbs) for bulk commercial quarry orders. Includes certified weight conversions and dump truck delivery load planning.

The Mathematics of Converting Volume to Tons

When ordering stone directly from a commercial quarry, prices and invoices are determined exclusively by scale tonnage. A commercial US short ton equals exactly 2,000 pounds.

Because different stone types have different mineral compositions and void ratios, the number of tons per cubic yard varies:

Volume to Tonnage Conversion Formula: 1. Cubic Yards (yd³) = [Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)] ÷ 27
2. Total Pounds (lbs) = Cubic Yards × Density (lbs/yd³)
3. US Short Tons = Total Pounds ÷ 2,000 lbs
Example: 10 yd³ of General Gravel @ 2,700 lbs/yd³ = 27,000 lbs ÷ 2,000 = 13.5 Tons.

Dump Truck Delivery Capacities & Axle Limits

Understanding how much gravel fits onto delivery trucks allows you to optimize hauling fees:

Truck Classification Tonnage Capacity Cubic Yard Capacity Best Project Scale
Single-Axle Dump Truck 5 – 7 Tons 4 – 5 yd³ Small patios, walkways, top-up repairs
Tandem-Axle Dump Truck 10 – 14 Tons 7 – 10 yd³ Standard driveways, foundation pads
Tri-Axle Dump Truck 16 – 22 Tons 12 – 15 yd³ Long driveways, commercial foundations
Semi End-Dump (18-Wheeler) 24 – 28 Tons 18 – 20 yd³ Road building, large subdivision construction

Frequently Asked Questions About Gravel Tonnage

For standard construction gravel with an average density of 1.35 tons per cubic yard, 10 cubic yards equals approximately 13.5 US short tons (27,000 lbs). If using denser crusher run or driveway gravel (1.42 tons/yd³), 10 yards equals approximately 14.2 tons.

Quarries use certified drive-on truck scales (weigh-in/weigh-out). Weight is legally measurable and repeatable, whereas measuring loose material in a truck bed by visual volume is imprecise due to uneven heap height and settlement during transit.

A standard single-axle dump truck carries 5 to 7 tons. A tandem-axle truck holds 10 to 14 tons. A tri-axle truck carries 16 to 22 tons. An articulated semi end-dump can transport 24 to 28 tons. Actual payload and volume vary by truck configuration, material density, and local weight restrictions.
